MAIN TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:1-7
I. Be strengthened Implies you can are weak, can get weak, thus we can get weak too.
A. Not referring to a strength that is:
1. physical : push ups, weight room, gym, muscles;
2. dietary: after surgery, or missing 2 meals, you need meat, hot soup, protein, iron, sugar, Gatorade;
3. emotional: Solider sees 5 buddies shot and killed in the middle of invasion Normandy WW2.
4. Worldly: pushy, bossy, forceful, domineering, power-ego with words and attitude;
5. But a Spiritual: prayer, Scripture, witnessing, obedience, isolation, take up your cross telling others about Jesus to an atheist, a co-worker, a stranger; maybe a relative shuns your presentation of the Bible, or loss of a job do to spiritual witness;
B. Benefits of strength: Strong engine/truck: tows more weight, an 18 wheeler, vs. golf cart.
Strong men: lift refrigerator, sofas, dressers, lifting furniture, logs, boxes, helpful.
Strength from food: energy, life, able to walk, run, lift, move,
Spiritual Strength: prayers, witnessing, joy, hope, faith, songs, peace, courage, to speak up , stand up, endure the trials of mean people, hard situations, the rejection of the world;
C. Examples of Strength in the Bible: Stephen forgives those who stone him,
Jesus puts the ear back on Malchus;
David did not kill Saul though chased for months and months;
David’s courage before Goliath.
Peter denied knowing Jesus 3x, Peter was not strong;
Acts 5:23 "We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside." [24] Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. [25] And someone came and told them, "Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people."
Acts 14:19-21 But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. [20] But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. [21] When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,
(In ourselves, we have no strength against demons) Mark 5:4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
(It is part of the Greatest Command, the greatest point of Worship and Love to God) Mark 12:30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' Mark 12:33 Luke 10:27
Luke 21:36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."
Luke 22:32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."
Acts 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
Acts 15:32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words.
Acts 15:41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
Acts 16:5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.
Acts 18:23 After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
Romans 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you—
Romans 16:25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages
Ephes. 3:16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, Ephes. 3:18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
Ephes. 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Philip. 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Col. 1:11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy,
1 Tim. 1:12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,
2 Tim. 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth.
Hebrews 12:12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,
Hebrews 13:9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.
1 Peter 4:11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 5:10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
II. How is Timothy to be Strengthened: How are we to be strengthened:
Not push-ups, not physical food
Not directly prayer and Scripture: as some religious duty and performance: (Pharisees did so)
a Straw for the water: water: is Jesus and his Grace:
Read 20 chapters instead of 2, pray for 5 hours instead of 1; just give more money and labor;
Not past performance, dedication, sacrifices, deeds, labors, successes, at least you have done A, B, C, D.
Not future potential of being better, doing more, making up for lost time, and lost ground:
B. Timothy and we are to be strengthened By Grace:
You have not deserved God’s gift, forgiveness, attention, presence, forgiveness, Salvation, love
It has not been your decisions, choices, prayers, mind heart that provided you Jesus and access to God.
Your past, current, and future failures will still need the grace of God.
This is not an excuse to sin, be lazy, quit, give up, and wallow in sin.
Rather it is the joy of knowing your security is in Jesus and He will never cast out his sheep,
so his sheep hear his voice and come to him.
You need God’s grace this week, for strength, you will be weak,
Without strength, there is no power, energy, force, vitality, and
Without Grace: You could not deserve for God to give you strength;
How much would you pay for an 40 ft truck, strong to move several rooms of furniture?
How would you like a 40 ft. truck for free? By Grace? Without price?
Movers are charging us $1200 to move a our belongings, not free strength, not grace, making me pay;
Yet God is giving us his strength for free, when we do not deserve it;
C. This Grace is only located in Jesus Christ:
His purity, obedience, perfection, never sinned,
completed everything in God’s purpose with complete faith, love, joy, and willingness,
Even to death on the Cross for sinners when he is spotless in thoughts, words, deeds.
Jesus is God, otherwise, He would not be an acceptable substitute for forgiveness and purity;
Be glad for Jesus providing Grace, to save, and also to strengthen after salvation;
It is an on-going, daily, constant renewal, constant refreshing, like sleeping each night is repeated;’
Without nightly sleep you lose your strength, without daily grace in Jesus you lose your strength too.
Communion: bread, wine: food: this is my body: ingest, united with you, strengthen you, give you life.
II. Entrust to faithful men (another sermon: can we find faithful men, or settle for anyone with a pulse)
b. [2] what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses
c. why: who will be able to teach others also. (a church title, without real teaching, should be REMOVED)
d. Strength does not mean you are a long-ranger, isolated, doing everything by yourself and on your own.
III. [3] Share in suffering (The tough part: why we need to be Strengthened by God and need God’s grace)
b. how: as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Solider reality
c. what: [4] No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, Are you entangled?
c2. why: since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. Is this your aim?
d. [5] An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
e. [6] It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.
IV.. [7] Think over what I say, Do we meditate on the Word?
a. for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
Compare: 2:7 with 3:7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. [8] Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.
V. 8. Remember Jesus Christ, (The good part: Who is our Strength and Grace)
a. risen from the dead, [STRENGTH OF GRACE: Life, Vindicated]
a2. the offspring of David, [STRENGTH OF GRACE: King]
b. as preached in my gospel (good news) [STRENGTH OF GRACE: Good News]
b2. [9] for which I am suffering,
bound with chains as a criminal. (Paul’s suffering in Chapter One; 2 Corinth 11:33)
b3. But the word of God is not bound! [STRENGTH OF GRACE: God’s Freedom]
Hallelujah! Rejoice!
c. [10] Therefore (Because the word of God is not bound!)
c2 I endure everything (The tough part is overcome in the grace of Jesus)
c3 (why) for the sake of the elect,
c4. (why) that they also may obtain the salvation
that is in Christ Jesus
with eternal glory. (eternal modifies glory, study both words)

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
A. 1:4 in all our affliction, 1:5 we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, 1:6 the same sufferings that we suffer. 1:7 as you share in our sufferings,
B. 2 Cor 1: 8 For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in
C. The Corinthian’s hesitation and lack of affirmation of Paul’s message by the 2nd Corinthians 3:1-2 and 2 Cor 10-12 while being confused by false apostles. D. The predominant unbelief of the Jews that Paul witnessed. 3:14-15; 4:1-3
E. 2 Cor 2:8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
F. 2 Cor. 11:23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.
John Calvin quote #1: “…it is ordered by the special Providence of God, that there should be in ministers no appearance of excellence, lest any thing of distinction should throw the power of God into the shade. As, therefore, the abasement of ministers, and the outward contempt of their persons give occasion for glory accruing to God, that man acts a wicked part, who measures the dignity of the gospel by the person of the minister.”….” Paul shows, that his abject condition is so far from detracting from the glory of God, that it is the occasion of advancing it.”
2 Yet, the “we” in v.16 can be extended to include the Christians in
A. 2 Cor 1:6 …if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. B. 2 Cor 1:7 ……we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.
John Calvin quote #2. on 4:12 “…it was unseemly that the Corinthians should live happily, and in accordance with their desire, and that they should, free from anxiety, take their ease, while in the mean time Paul was struggling with incessant hardships. Such an allotment would certainly have been exceedingly unreasonable. It was also necessary that the folly of the Corinthians should be reproved, inasmuch as they contrived to themselves a Christianity without the cross, and, not content with this, held in contempt the servants of Christ, because they were not so effeminate.”……(v.16) ”(Paul) beats down that insolence, in which they in no ordinary degree erred, inasmuch as under the influence of ambition, they held a man in higher estimation, the farther he was from the cross of Christ. (insolence = rude, offensive disrespectful act or attitude),
3 The Christian life will have heavy and sober moments that will tempt one to lose heart. It is wrong to think each month will be a “happy-clappy, giggle-giggle, grin-n-win” life. Jeremiah is known at the weeping prophet; Isaiah describes Jesus in 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; John 16:20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
3b. These sorrows are a result of men who witness mankind rejecting God and God’s message, and the correlating tribulation placed on believers. When we are tempted to lose heart, may it be in relation to a sorrow over mankind’s rejection of God and God’s message which also further evidences itself in tribulation placed on believers;
In contrast, our temptation to lose heart should not be connected to worldly sorrow. 2 Cor. 7:10 worldly grief produces death. Mark 10:22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the
4 Though Paul was tempted to lose heart, and at times “despaired even of life:” (2 Cor 1:8), it is repeatedly clear that Paul did not lose faith nor lose heart. His sorrow is not to be mistaken as a morbid pattern of defeat, doom, gloom, depression, worry, fear, anxiety, fretting, regret, resignation, or sense of futility.
A. 2 Cor. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.
B. 2 Cor 1:9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.
C. 2 Cor 2:14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession…
D. 3:5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God
E. 2 Cor. 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. (faint not, fail not)
F. 2 Cor. 4:7 the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.
G. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; H. perplexed, but not driven to despair;
K. 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
L. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake,
so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
M. 13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, "I believed, and so I spoke," we also believe, and so we also speak, (Psalm 116) 14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
N. 15 it is all for your sake, that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
T O D A Y ’ S F O C U S .
A. 2Cor 4:16 So we do not lose heart. [not weak, fail, faint, weary] Luk 18:1 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.'" 6 And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
2Cor 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. Eph 3:13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory. 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith--that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 2Th 3:13 As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. Gal 6:9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
B. Though our outer self is…. 1Pe 3:3 Do not let your adorning be external--the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear-- 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. wasting away, to rot thoroughly, that is, (by implication) to ruin (passively decay utterly): destroy, perish. (Vincent Word Studies…progressive decay.)
Luk 12:33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. Rev 8:9 A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
our inner self ; Focused on the inner nature, not the outer nature. Romans 5:3-5, James 1:2-4
Mark 7:18 He said to them, "Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person." Mat 7:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
Rom 2:28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.
Psa 51:6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
C. is being renewed renovate: - renew. (Focused on what is being renewed; and indeed being renewed daily, not what is wasting away.)
Eph 4:21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Isa 40:31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
day by day. Luke 11:3; Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread, Luke 9:23 And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Proverbs 8:34 Blessed is the one who listens to me (wisdom), watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors.
D. v.17 For this light (easy). The affliction is slight, compared to the eternal wrath of a Holy God on sinners in a fiery hell, or in context his own earthly persecutions. Mat 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
E. Momentary…….affliction pressure (literally or figuratively): - afflicted, anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble. The affliction is momentary, compared to the eternal just wrath of a Holy God to the lost, or again in context the brief 70 years of Paul’s earthly life. James 4:14 ….For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. Thomas Watson, 'Affliction may be lasting, but it is not everlasting'.
1 Cor. 7:29 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, [30] and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, [31] and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.
F. is preparing for us to work fully, that is, accomplish; by implication to finish, fashion: - cause, do (deed), perform, work (out). The affliction has a purpose, it is not pointless or in vain, and a purpose to prepare us. 2Co 7:10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.
G. v.17 The affliction is preparing us for something eternal; Earthly affliction is less than 100 years.
H. v.17 The affliction is preparing us for eternal weight of glory, not eternal shame, guilt, and uncleanness.
an eternal……weight……of glory [contrasted to: momentary…..light…….affliction]
weight figuratively a load, abundance, glory - dignity, honour, praise
I. beyond all comparison, [kath' huperbolēn eis huperbolēn], from which we get our word hyperbole, which means to exaggerate to the point the comparison is not true; (i.e. I’ve told you a million times.) However Paul’s use is not to fabricate or lie, but rather similar to saying an “excess upon excess” (A.T. Robertson’s Word Pictures) (An expression after the form of Hebrew superlatives, in which the emphatic word is twice repeated. Lit., exceedingly unto excess. Vincent Word Studies).
(Excerpts from Bryn MacPhail www.reformedtheology.ca/2Cor4b.htm For Paul, the key to enduring his suffering was his contemplation of heaven. Serious contemplation of heaven's glory is not idle foolishness, it is an essential Christian discipline. Unless we engage in the serious contemplation of our future state of blessedness, we will miss what God is doing in the midst of our present suffering. Samuel Rutherford-- when he was cast into the cellars of affliction, he remembered that the great King always kept his wine there. Charles Spurgeon-- those who dive in the sea of affliction bring up rare pearls.)
J. 4:18 as we look to take aim at (spy), (figuratively) regard: - consider, take heed, look at (on). A crucial factor is “What are you looking to” v.18 The things seen or unseen. (Sam Storms… The renewal only occurs while or to the extent that “we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. As we fix the gaze of our hearts on the glorious hope of the age to come, God progressively renews our inner being, notwithstanding the simultaneous decay of our outer being! This is no fleeting or casual glance or occasional thought concerning the “glory” of the age to come. The apostle has in mind a fixed, steadfast gaze, an attentive and studious concentration on the inestimable blessings of heaven. To contradict a popular cliché: you will never be of much earthly good unless you are utterly heavenly minded.)
As we look not to the things that are seen
but (we look) to the things that are unseen. (WHY…)
K. #1 For the things that are seen are transient, temporary: endure for a time, for a season, temporal.
Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. (v. 25 (KJV) Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; )
#2 but the things that are unseen are eternal.
He contrasts the transient present world of persecution vs. the permanent and eternal future of glory.
We mind not the things seen, whether affliction or refreshment come, so as to be seduced by the latter, or deterred by the former. [Chrysostom c. 347–407]
Whatever my affliction is, the wisdom of Him who sends it, should make me embrace and bear it without repining….
I should welcome whatever afflictions loosen me from this world, and bring me nearer to God. [James Meikle]
Hast thou no scar? No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand? I hear thee sung as mighty in the land;
I hear them hail thy bright, ascendant star. Hast thou no scar?
Hast thou no wound? Yet I was wounded by the archers; spent, Leaned Me against a tree to die; and rent
By ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned. Hast thou no wound?
No wound? No scar? Yet, as the Master shall the servant be, And piercèd are the feet that follow Me.
But thine are whole; can he have followed far Who hast no wound or scar? [Amy Carmichael, Missionary to
Spurgeon: Give me the support of God, and I can easily bear the insults of men. Let me lay my head on the chest of Jesus, and I will not fear the interruptions of care and trouble. If my God will forever give me the light of His smile, and a glimpse of His blessing--it is enough. Come on enemies, persecutors, demons, yes, the Devil himself, for "the Lord God is my sun and shield." Gather, you clouds, and surround me, I carry a Sun within me; blow, wind of the frozen north, I have a fire of living coal within me; yes, death, kill me, but I have another life--a life in the light of God's countenance.
1 Cor. 2:9 But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him"—
Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
1 Pet 4:13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
Philip. 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Piper: Does the thought of dying give us more pain at losing what we love on earth than it gives us joy at gaining Christ?)

Kosmos Study
STUDY OF KOSMOS, WORLD: INTRODUCTION
There is a popular assumption that the word “kosmos” which is translated “world’ refers to each and every individual who has ever been or will be on the planet. However, this assumption contradicts the usage and intention of the word “kosmos” in the overwhelmingly majority of cases. The word “kosmos” has a variety of meanings and only the context, in accordance with the whole counsel of Scripture, can provide the specific meaning intended.
There are three broad categories to which “kosmos” can be translated
#1) referring to each and every individual.
#2) Not referring to any individual at all.
#3) referring to only some individuals, but not all individuals
However, the erroneous assumption, as stated earlier, is to deny the existence of the last two categories, and thus force kosmos to be translated always as referring to each and every individual. It will become evident that this assumption and forced translation simply misrepresents the Bible, truth, and sound doctrine.
#1.) TO EACH AND EVERY INDIVIDUAL
This study has found only six instances when the word kosmos should be translated as referring to each and every individual. We will also find that technically even these six instances cannot refer to every individual on the planet. Let us briefly examine them.
#1.1) Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
The Church is guilty before God, but her guilt has been atoned by the blood of Jesus Christ. The reprobate is guilty before God, but their guilt remains charged against them. However, there is a very important nuance to make that even this usage of the word “kosmos” cannot refer to every single individual. Jesus is fully man, and a human individual.
If the word “kosmos” refers to every single human individual, and Jesus is a human individual, then this verse is saying that Jesus is guilty before God, yet Jesus is sinless, holy, and pure, and not guilty before God. It is not helpful to create a complicated definition which states that kosmos is each and every individual, except Jesus, because that makes John 3:16 say that God so loved each and every individual, expect Jesus. Such complication and heresy can be avoided as we continue to learn the proper rules in translating kosmos.
#1.2)Matthew 18:7-8 "Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! [8] And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.
All mankind, even the Christian Body, has sinned and suffers from sin on some level. However we state again that Jesus is a human individual and He never sinned.
#1.3) John 7:4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
It is fair to conclude that the disciples wanted Jesus to present himself to everyone in the public, however, from learning Peter’s disdain of the gentiles in the book of ACTS, and the disciples fencing off of children, we can conclude that this usage was not an indication that Jesus should march around to every individual on the planet on every continent. Since they still had not seen Lazarus raised from the dead after four days of burial (and even mocked him then) it is unlikely that they expected Jesus to display himself to each individual who has already died the past 4000 years, i.e. Goliath.
#1.4,5,6) 1 Cor. 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; [28] And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
The last three times that Kosmos refers to all individuals is still set in a context of segmenting out a portion of the world. It was some of the foolish individuals, weak individuals, base individuals that were chosen out of the world. As we will investigate later, the indication here is that God is saving people even beyond the Jewish bloodline. As God is choosing individuals out of the world, he is not choosing every individual in the world, so we see in existence two groups of people on the planet. As these two groups of people are discussed in Scripture, we learn of individuals who are “of the world”, and individuals who are “not of the world.”
This is where the confusion can come in, because the individuals of the kosmos (a), will in other places be called--- the “kosmos (b)”, but as we have just seen, being called the “kosmos (b)” cannot refer to the individuals of the church, but only to those individuals of the kosmos (a).
Now begin to compare these six instances where one can attempt to translate kosmos as each and every individual with the abundance of times when it is starkly impossible to do.
#2. NOT TO ANY INDIVIDUAL AT ALL
Kosmos at times must be translated into a second category where it is not referring to any individual at all. Nearly 120 times by my count. This category includes two basic groupings:
#A) When kosmos refers to land, dirt, earth, the planet, the created material substance of the planet. At times this usage will refer to a location, region, place, city, geographic area and can also be stated in contrast to the location of heaven.
Isaiah 27:6 He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.
Obviously no individuals will have fruit filling their face.
#B). Kosmos can also be translated not referring to any individual, but rather referring to a “time, era, age, season, period of time.” Historians may refer to the Roman World, and while the individual descendants of
John 12:25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Many times kosmos must be translated to this category and groupings which context forbids that it be rendered as referring to any individual at all. For the sake of thoroughness we have added to the “Appendix A” the other verses where kosmos cannot be referring to any individual at all, but must either be translated as land, dirt, planet, or time, era, age, period of time.
Though some of these verse associations may be disputed after intense scrutiny, our observations have found that roughly 121 times kosmos is used without reference to any individual at all. This greatly overshadows the 6 occurrences where it was translated as referring to each and every individual provided a noted caveat. Even at times when kosmos is referring to “land, dirt, earth”, it can still be used with a limited scope of acreage, and not entailing each and every individual acre of the planet.
John 17:13-16 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, (LAND, DIRT) that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
John 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world
Jesus did not speak on every continent and did not travel on every continent, though He did speak in the World. The term is not referring to every acre of land when in the context of geography, and likewise the term is not always in reference to every individual person when in the context of people.
Jesus did not present himself to every individual every born before the Deluge and at the
We have looked at two categorizations of kosmos, when it refers to all individuals, and when it refers to no individual. The third and final categorization of kosmos has the most complexity of the three. In this categorization kosmos will refer to some individuals but not to each and every individual on the planet.
#3. ONLY TO SOME INDIVIDUALS, BUT NOT TO ALL INDIVIDUALS
i. REPROBATE AND NOT THE ELECT
1 Cor. 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
If world means each and every individual then the entire church which is made up of individuals will be condemned. However, we know that the church is not condemned. Since the church is not condemned, then the WORLD of individuals who are condemned cannot include any of the individuals of the church.
John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. (Satan is not the prince of the church)
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
If world means each and every individual then the entire church cannot receive the Spirit of truth. However, we know that the church is sealed with the Spirit. Since the church is filled with the Spirit, then the WORLD of individuals who cannot receive the Spirit of truth cannot include any of the individuals of the church.
John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
The church does not hate the church, Peter did not hate John.
The church does not hate the Jesus.
John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. (the World does not include the individuals of the church, stated 5 times)
John 16:20-21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
(Clearly the World, does not include the individuals of the church—who are sorrowful..)
John 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
KEY!! John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
(Clearly the World, does not include the individuals of the church—who are prayed for..)
John 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (The Church does not hate the church) John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. [16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. ( the World does not include the individuals of the church, stated 5 times)
Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
(The Church is not condemned, the 8 on the ark are not condemned, Christ is a human individual who is not condemned)
James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
(The Church is to be a friend to the Church, a friend of the church is not an enemy of God.)
1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
(The Church knows the Church)
1 John 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. (The Church does not hate the Church, the Brethren)
****Rev. 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: (NOT THE ELECT, THE CHURCH) he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. (The antichrist is not in the true Church)
1 John 4: 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (The antichrist is not in the true Church, Jesus is.)
1 John 4: 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. ( The church does not hear the false prophets)
John 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, (limited LAND, EARTH, certainly not to the Amazon Jungle) that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. [14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, (Moses would not hate them, nor Peter hate them, nor the church hate the church) because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. [15] I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
John 17: 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
(Clear Cut limiting of what individuals make up the world, all but the elect)
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. [5] Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (The church does not need to overcome the church?)
****1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the WHOLE world lieth in wickedness. (The Church does not lie in wickedness.)
Isaiah 13:11 I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
(Christians are chastened, but not punished, Jesus was fully man and an individual on the world, but not punished for his evil, for he never sinned.)
1 Cor. 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
1 Cor. 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. (this verse could technically be including all unregenerate elect)
2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (Satan is not the god of the church)
2 Cor. 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
(If the church has the sorrow the world, then it does not have godly sorrow, nor salvation)
John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (context of the chapter shows the Holy Spirit treating the church different)
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
(Most likely not implying I have overcome the church, but I have overcome the this system of people in this pre-consummation era)
John 7:7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
(The Church does not hate Jesus, the works of the Church are not evil.)
John 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
(those dead for the past 4000 years in Amazon,
John 17:25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. (cannot include the individuals of these disciples.)
Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Hebrews 11:38 (Of whom the world was not worthy) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
(While the Church is not worthy of other saints, and so a universal application could be given, the Church was not persecuting itself, so here the world is referring to reprobate as hatred is promised in John 15:18-27)
1 Cor. 4:9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
(Though even the elect witnessed the hardship of the apostles, certainly those individuals who have been already dead for 4,000 years, and those in remote Amazon, Alaska, Australia did not see this; most likely he is referring to the world which has been persecuting him: the unregenerate)
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
(While the elect did live in corruption, and thus this world could apply to all individuals, we learn that the church has escaped the corruption, so we have a limitation and distinction of the word world: Individuals who are in the world and still in corruption, Individuals who are on the planet but have escaped corruption. This world cannot mean LAND, DIRT because land does not lust, people do.)
2 Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
(I considered placing this under the “era, age, time” category, but people are killed and people are spared, so the old world is referring not to an “era” nor to “land”, because an “era and land” were not spared, a person was spared.)
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. (John Gill’s commentary on these clauses is great!)
Romans 3:6 God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?
Psalm 9:8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. Psalm 96:13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.
Psalm 98:9 Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.
John 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (Is he a prince over land, or over people? If people, Satan is not prince of the church)
ii. IS UNIVERSALISM BEING TAUGHT?
OR IS JESUS A FAILURE AT WHAT HE IS TRYING TO DO.
John 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
John 12:46-47 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. [47] And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. (DID JESUS FAIL?)
2 Cor. 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
John 12:46-47 I am come a light into the world, (LAND, EARTH) that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. [47] And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, (MEN INCLUDING AND BEYOND JEWS) but to save the world. (MEN INCLUDING AND BEYOND JEWS)
John 6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. (the slaughtered Egyptian infants too? )
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
****John 1:9-10 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. [10] He was in the world, and the world (LAND, DIRT) was made by him, and the world (PEOPLE, YET ONLY UNREGENERATE PEOPLE) knew him not.
****John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
iii. GENTILES AND NOT PHYSICAL JEWS
Romans 11:12 Now if the fall of them (the PHYSICAL JEWS) be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fullness?
Romans 11:15 For if the casting away of them (the PHYSICAL JEWS) be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
iv. VALUES/DESIRES/GOALS/PRIORITES
Matthew 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 18:36-37 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
1 Cor. 1:20-21 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? [21] For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; AGE
1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, (if people, then, we ARE TO love the church, if system, then the system is carried out by PEOPLE!) neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. [17] And the world (the system passes away, and so do the people who establish the system) passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Ephes. 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
(The World does not walk like the church, the church is not “of the world”, so it stands to
reason that “this world” cannot mean to include the CHURCH who is walking different)
2 Peter 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
v. IMPORTANT TO NOTICE
Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that ALL THE world should be taxed.
(Did he tax Noah?
Luke 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
(a contrast of two groups, the children of the world EXCLUDES children of light.)
John 14:30-31 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. [31] But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
(unspotted from the CHURCH???, this world means everyone but the church)
1 Cor. 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
Is the wisdom of the CHURCH (WHO IS CHRIST) foolishness with God?
***John 8:26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? (Obviously the world does not include the Christians of v.21, because the manifestation is not given to the world, yet too the Christian)
John 14:30-31 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. [31] But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
(Satan is not the prince of the Church; v.31 To those who have died the past 4,000 years, the slaughtered Egyptian infants are supposed to posthumously know Jesus loves the Father?)
John 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
